To précis the work of one of the most famous songwriters and musicians in the history of
music is an almost impossible task. In 2002 Sir Paul
McCartney not only fits that description but refuses to rest on his laurels, remaining highly active as a current recording artist with imminent touring plans.
The genius whose songs with John Lennon during the 1960s helped create the Beatles' legend that has grown ever since, McCartney has continued to work, with few breaks, either in the studio or on the road. After the Beatles' demise, he released the acclaimed albums McCartney and Ram with wife Linda, but was soon at the helm of another multi-million-selling group, Wings, on such highly successful albums as Red Rose Speedway, Band On The Run, Venus and Mars and London Town. During the 1980s, he worked
with longtime confederates like George Martin and Ringo Starr but also with such new musical partners as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and at the end of the decade another famous Liverpudlian, Elvis Costello.
He became involved in various film and charity projects, toured Russia, became one of the world's most famous and committed vegetarian and ecological campaigners with Linda, and in 1989 undertook his first world tour under his own
name. The 1990s brought not only more rock recording and touring, but a development of his interest in classical music (including his Liverpool Oratorio and another such work, Standing Stone).
McCartney was knighted in 1996, and undertook a reunion with fellow surviving Beatles Starr and George Harrison for the massively successful Beatles Anthology retrospective on disc, television and in book form. This led to the release late in 2000 of 1, a collection of Beatles' chart-toppers that became the fastest-selling album ever released, amassing shipments of 18 million copies in just five weeks,
during which time it topped the charts in 30 countries.
Following 2001's new album Driving Rain, his plans for 2002 include a just-announced North American tour and marriage to his fiancée Heather Mills.
