MAGICAL HISTORY TOURS
GET A TICKET TO RIDE WITH BREAKS FOR BEATLE FANS
Tina Ediss

THEY began as a cheeky pop group from Liverpool and became a legend that swept the world. As 60s icons The Beatles are immortalised on new Royal Mail stamps and plans are unveiled to move Ringo Starr's old home into a museum, TINA EDISS is coming to take you away on a magical tour of the Fab Four's old haunts...

CHILDHOOD HOMES

THE houses where Paul McCartney and John Lennon grew up are both open to the public. Mendips, on Menlove Avenue in the suburb of Woolton, is a detached house that looks just as it did when John was growing up with his Aunt Mimi - whose china is on show in the hall. In John's bedroom there's a poster of Brigitte Bardot and records by Lonnie Donegan, Little Richard and Roy Orbison. Paul lived at 20 Forthlin Road, which has been made to look as it did in the 50s. It's shabby but comfy, with black and white photos - Paul and John, heads down playing guitars in the armchair in the corner. DAY TRIPPER Tours Wed-Sun from mid March to October. Adults £13, child £2 (0870 900 0256, www.nationaltrust.org.uk).

MYSTERY TOUR

TAKE a psychedelic coach on the Magical Mystery Tour of Beatle landmarks. In Penny Lane, the shelter in the middle of the roundabout is now a bistro called Sergeant Pepper's. Stop at the gates of Strawberry Field, the orphanage that inspired John's most ambitious song. The tour ends at the rebuilt Cavern Club in Mathew Street - the original opened on January 16, 1957, so there are lots of 50th birthday events. DAY TRIPPER £12.95 Magical Mystery Tour and Cavern Club both online at www.cavernliverpool.co.uk).

THE CASBAH

BEFORE the Cavern, even before Ringo, the fledgling Beatles, then called the Quarrymen, played at the Casbah Coffee Club run by Mona Best, mum of drummer Pete, in the cellar of their house. Tours are by appointment only and are guided by members of the family. It's virtually unchanged from the days when John and Paul helped paint the ceiling. DAY TRIPPER Tours Thurs, Fri, Sat, Mon, 11am-5pm. £15 adults, accompanied kids free (0151 280 3519, www.casbahcoffeeclub.com).

THE BEATLES STORY

THIS hi-tech museum at the Albert Dock tells the whole story under one roof. The White Room where John plays Imagine as white curtains ripple in the breeze is particularly moving. DAY TRIPPER Adults £8.99, kids £4.99 (0151 709 1963, www.beatlesstory.com). For Liverpool Beatles attractions, see www.visitliverpool.com WHERE TO STAY Express by Holiday Inn at Albert Dock (0151 709 1133, www.hiexpress.com) offer B&B at £70 a room (£35pp).

HAMBURG

THE early Beatles played night after night in the German port's Reeperbahn red-light area. Some clubs have gone and some remain - the Indra has been rebuilt, the Star is a cafŽ, the Kaiser Keller is still open with a plaque outside. There's not too much to see Beatle-wise but fans visit in their thousands. WHERE TO STAY Eurobreak (020 8780 7700, www.eurobreak.co.uk) offer three nights at the three-star Hotel Monopol for £199pp B&B, with flights from Heathrow. More info: www.germany-tourism.co.uk

LONDON

TAKE a guided walk with Beatle Brain of Britain Richard Porter. See Paul's offices in Soho, the art gallery where John met Yoko and the former Apple HQ at 3 Savile Row, where the band played their last live gig on the roof in 1969. A ticket to ride takes you to Abbey Road Studios in St John's Wood where nearly all of the Beatles songs were recorded and the band strode on to the zebra crossing for their famous Abbey Road LP cover. The wall outside the studio is repainted every four months to cover up graffiti by fans. DAY TRIPPER Beatles Walks £6pp, www.beatlesinlondon.com or London Walks, www.walks.com WHERE TO STAY The Ibis London City (0870 609 0963, www.ibishotel.com) offer weekend rates at £65 per room (£32.50pp).

AMSTERDAM

"DROVE from Paris to the Amsterdam Hilton, talking in our bed for a week..." sang John in the band's last No 1, The Ballad Of John and Yoko. He and Yoko spent their honeymoon in Room 902 in a "bed-in for peace". It's now the John and Yoko Honeymoon Suite with historic photos and one of John's guitars. You can stay in it for around £940 a night (00 31 20 710 60 00, www.hilton.com). A normal room (off season B&B) is £149 (£74.50pp). For flights to Amsterdam try Flybe (www.flybe.com).
